William J. Riley founded the New Balance Arch Support Company in the Boston area, manufacturing arch supports and other accessories designed to improve shoe fit. His first product, a flexible arch support, was designed with three support points to provide greater balance and comfort in the shoe. It is believed that Riley came up with the name "New Balance" by observing chickens in his yard and demonstrated the way his arch supports worked by keeping a chicken foot on his office desk.

The Lambert is frequently stated to be a favourite amongst collectors.

Frank Lambert, a French immigrant, spent seventeen years developing his typewriter. The first patent was in 1884 and it came to market in 1896. The typewriter sold well in America and Europe for a number of years. The lever protruding out from the 9:00 position was shifted to three positions, giving three characters for each key.
Design
Lambert is a slab serif family, influenced by studies into typefaces found from various typewriters. Lambert has typewriter characteristics, but does not have mono spacing or metrics. So it can be used at large and small sizes. The typeface includes a collection of features that provide designers with a personal choice on various stylistic preferences. These features include a number of lowercase stylistic alternates, some alternate accents that sit within character counters, circled numbers and a wide set of arrows.
