The arrival of mechanical movable type printing in Europe in the Renaissance introduced the era of mass communication, which permanently altered the structure of society. The relatively unrestricted circulation of information and ideas transcended borders, captured the masses in the Reformation.
Design
Bureau is a Renaissance inspired, transitional serif family. The sharply cut typeface was first influenced by handcrafted metal punch cuts from printing in Renaissance Europe. Bureau reflects hard edges and elegant curves that can be seen in letters from old-style serifs such as Granjon and Garamond. Drawing the typeface through digital methods instinctively brought in sharp vectors, which resulted in the sharp serifs and horizontal flat ink traps in the italic styles. The typeface includes a collection of features that provide designers with a personal choice on various stylistic preferences. These features include a number of discretionary ligatures, oldstyle figures and a set of decorative italics. Other features include an alternate double-story ‘at’ symbol, circled numbers and a wide set of arrows.
